Egginton Battery Storage Site - Planning Application DMPA/2024/0432
Erection of a battery storage unit on Derby Road, Egginton
Plans have been submitted to South Derbyshire District Council to erect a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on land at Derby Road Egginton DE65 6HL.
The company Net Zero Sixteen Ltd responsible for the application, presented their proposal to Willington Parish Council on 11th June 2024 and outlined the work involved. A BESS is attached to the National Grid and stores a large amount of electricity up to 100MW. This is usually produced from windfarms and solar energy. When electricity usage increases this stored energy can be released back into the National Grid and could potentially power 323,000 homes for a maximum of two hours.
Willington Parish Council is not against this type of technology, in fact we welcome green energy but the issue with this particular planning application is that as I mentioned earlier the batteries have to be connected to the National Grid and they have applied to run a cable from the batteries located on the A38 at Egginton to the National Grid in Willington located behind the old Power Station. The proposal is to run it underground at the side of the A38, along Castleway, through the centre of the village, then along Twyford Road to the National Grid. The length is approximately 3 kilometres of road. Their proposal is to have temporary traffic lights or stop and go boards in operation whilst the work is being carried out. Working times would be between 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday. The work will take approximately 12 months to complete. As you can imagine the disruption and chaos on the roads around the village for the duration.
We have asked them to consider utilising the brownfield site on the Power Station which would limit the disruption to the village but they have said that is not possible. The Parish Council have written a letter of objection to South Derbyshire District Council on the grounds of the unsuitable location for the battery storage causing major disruption to the village for the 12-month period. If you agree with what the Parish council has said it is important that you write a letter of objection to South Derbyshire District Council. You can make comments on their planning website.
